This morning I couldn't unlock my car (Honda Jazz 2004, automatic) neither regular or spare key would work with the central locking. Opened the drivers door manually, turned the key in the ignition - nothing happens - no engine noise, no starter motor, no lights on the dash, nothing at all. Battery is not flat - or at least I've done nothing to drain it (didn't leave the lights on or anything). I drove it fine on Saturday, was parked at home on Sunday and this morning - nothing! Any ideas? Should I check fuses (?) just seems so odd that it would be fine one day and then nothing the next.

Thanks for any help.

Hi

I assume you got this sorted out ages ago - what was it? It sounds like a completey flat battery if the locks wouldn't even undo.  If you didn't leave the lights on, I'd suspect a short through the alternator or some relay contacts stuck closed, or CD palyer is a common cause of battery drain (not specifically on the Jazz, but on various other cars)

I realize this post is a few years old now, but does anyone know what could cause the problems above? My car is experiencing the exact same problem today. No idea what the problem is. We have tried jump-starting but no luck. I would really appreciate any suggestions!!

Got exactly the same behavior. Have the car running fine for a couple of weeks and then, stopping the car for a couple of hours or so, and it does not start. Connecting to battery of other car, I can start it and it may run well for weeks again.

Suspicious so far:
- Stuck relays (as suggested above),
- Faulty battery somehow (strange...).

I have not changed the battery so far. Would like to understand how can it be the battery. Most likely I change the battery and the same symptoms will persist.

Ideas to either test hte battery or debug the problem would be welcome.

Hi

It is quite possible that your battery is nearing the end of its useful life and although it usually has just enough charge to start the car, if anything happens to affect it, such as making a short journey with lights, heated windo etc on, there isn't enough reserve left in the battery to cope. Lots of garages will do a free battery test which will tell you the condition. Alternatively, it could be the alternator not charging enough - check the drive belt (AKA fan belt) is tight, then get the alternator charge rate checked. You can get a rough idea yourself by starting the engine, let it idle and turn the lights and heater fan on. Listen to the note of the fan, then rev the engine to about 2000 rpm. If the fan note rises slightly, the alternator is charging and it's probably OK.

Hope that helps
