Hi,

I have just bought and Audi A4 Avant 05 Plate 2.0 TDI.

The car was fine when I drove it home. When I went to start it up again the car had no power at all. I soon discovered that the negative terminal on the battery was not secured properly so I reconnected and tightened it and it all appeared to be fine.

Until the day after, my wife stalled the car by accident after which the head lights remained on (even with the key out of the ignition) and none of the indicators or windscreen wipers would work!

I disconnected the battery thinking it may be a 'computer' problem however it did not fix the problem. After a short while having the engine running I decided to take the car home. The minute I moved away the indicators sprang back into life!

Can anyone advise me what is going on - is there a loose connection somewhere?

Thanks in advance.

Hi

I suspect this is nothing too serious as long as you get it sorted out quickly and properly. The root cause is most likely the battery. The fact that the terminal was loose suggest that someone had been charging it - and that will be because it had let them down. Very few people will buy a new battery for a car they're about to sell, so it has probably been charged a few times to keep it going until the sale, and has been refitted badly. Frankly, anything over 3 years from a battery is a bonus and I would replace it now to avoid endless future problems. The headlamp and indicator problems may well be associated with disconnecting the battery and/or a loose terminal.

My advice is to get a decent new battery, fit it properly, making sure the battery retaining clamp is fitted and tight, make sure the terminals are clean and dry before you tighten them down and then keep an eye on the car for a few days. If the terminals look a bit dodgy it's worth getting them replaced - an automotive supplier will be able to supply ones of the right length with the right terminals. Make sure the other ends of the cables are tight as well. Finally, check that the alternator drive belt is tight (if you get a loud screeching after starting up, it needs tightening or replacing altogether).
