petrol gauge problem on ford focus Expand / Collapse

Ok, my car wouldn't start, had it taken into a repair centre, turns out i needed a new fuel pump which i think is electronic on my car, its a ford focus estate year 2000 W reg. Its been a fantastic car and never had a problem with it in the 5 years of owning it. I picked the car up after it had been fixed, the petrol warning light was not even lit up and it broke down on me, after it being picked up from the garage again they said it had just ran out of petrol, being confused i told them there was petrol in it and the gauge was just under 1/4 tank! They explained to me that it would cost near £200 to get the calibration for that fixed, but instead probably just guess when i need to refill and keep it topped up. The gauge on my car was perfectly fine before going into the garage, has this fault occurred because of the work they have had to do? New fuel pump, oil and petrol filter.

Im confused, can anyone give me advise?

Hi

It sounds as if they're trying to pull the wool over your eyes on this one.  The sender unit for the fuel gauge is an intergral part of the pump and the float sticks out from it on a piece of wire.  They may well have caught the wire or float when installing it, or the float is fouling on something.  Either way, it sounds like incorrect installation - go back and tell them to do it properly.  I'm not aware that anything need to be "calibrated" - they're trying to fob you off.  If in doubt, ring a Ford dealer and ask them if it has to be done.
