If the tyres are half worn, the balance may be out and they may need re-checking. However, the brake judder may point to a bit of suspension wear - top or bottom ball joint would be favourite but a good shaking on an MOT test ramp will reveal all. If the steering shakes while braking, but there's not much vibration from the brake pedal, suspension wear is the most likely. If the brake pedal judders as well, it could be something that's becoming quite a bit more common; brake disc thickness variation. Often diagnosed as warped discs (which it isn't) it's due to uneven wear of the disc. The simple cure is to find a garage with an on-car disc lathe (check this web site for your area: <BR><A href="http://www.skimmydiscs.co.uk/Find%20a%20lathe2.html" target=_blank>http://www.skimmydiscs.co.uk/Find%20a%20lathe2.html</A>). <BR>Get them to skim the discs on the car provided they're still comfortably above the minimum wear limit.
