Just book it in for a test and you can drive perfectly legally to the garage for the test. As to what the problem is, if it is an air leak it's usually one of the engine breather pipes or a loose clip on the large pipes going to and from the throttle housing. Make sure the clips are tight, then look at all the rubber pipes in case any are split. After the car is a few years old it's also a good idea to put jubilee clips on them as well, especially if any turn on the metal pipe they connect to. However, the garage the cars at doesn't seem terribly bright, so it might be as well to let the new one start from scratch and run a diagnostic code check first.

Tim
